Building a ‘Cinema of Diversity’ in Europe: A Comparative Socio-History of the Careers of Filmmakers with Foreign Backgrounds in France and Germany (1980–2018)
ABSTRACT
This socio-historical and comparative project aims to analyse the social and professional trajectories of filmmakers with foreign backgrounds in France and Germany from the 1980s onwards. It will examine the public policies of ‘diversity’ implemented in the cinematographic fields by the two countries and describe the integration of film directors mostly originated from countries of Europe’s neighbourhood. These filmmakers, who cross real and symbolic borders to make their films, are actors of cultural transfers and participate in the construction of new cinematographic norms in Europe. The study is based on the quantitative processing of databases and on the analysis of interviews, as well as documentary and archival sources.
BIOGRAPHY
Claire Tomasella is a Ph.D. candidate at the EHESS in Paris and associate researcher at Centre Marc Bloch Institute in Berlin. She holds a M.A. in Comparative Literature from Paris-IV Sorbonne University, a M.A. in Journalism from Sciences Po Paris and a M.A. in History from EHESS. Member of the Franco-German doctoral college ‘Building differences: structure - social order – communication’, she has been a fellow in various French and German institutions (CIERA, DAAD, the Senate of Berlin, IFRA-SHS). Before starting her doctorate, she worked in France as an editor for an organisation specialising in the history of immigration and as a journalist for various media houses.
